A Gluten free Traveling Woodchuck

I just returned from my visit to Texas, Dallas to be specific, where I was able to go to one of my favorite Gluten Free restaurants. Kozy Kitchen is a small place on the north end of the downtown area of Dallas. It is seemingly a place that only the locals go due to the small parking area and lack of signage. Once you enter you will be greeted by great service and really good food. Most items are GF and a great GF desert menu. The Buffalo Tacos are a must try item. The coffee was something that I don't really pay much attention too as being from the NW, I know what good coffee is all about, however, I found the coffee to be just the right amount of bitterness with a smooth texture that really hit the spot.

There are some good places to go in downtown area, but not much in the outer areas. Most of the grocery stores have some Gluten Free items that you can take back to your hotel room. But, you really need to understand some French to make this happen. Sans Gluten is a good thing to look for.

The people of Montreal were really nice. Including the nice local police officer that let me know that you can not talk on a cell phone or even use one in the car. Good to know....now. No ticket, and I was able to get directions at the same time.

Zero 8 was good, small portions and somewhat expensive for what you got.

Bocca Loupa Café Bistro-1206 Stanley Street,, Montreal, QC, was very good for coffee, no Gluten Free food to have, but the owner was wonderful and spoke very good English. A must when in Montreal, QC.

I have no ideal why that comment comes to mind, other than the fact that I don't eat bread made from wheat and this is where the issue starts.Try and find a nice burger served on a bun not made from wheat flour, NOT going to happen. This is why I should own stock in
Chipotle Grill as I eat there more than I do at home. When I travel it's Chipotle for lunch and it's Chiptle for dinner. You know you have been somewhere to often when you walk in and are asked if it will be the usual? And this happens in both Seattle and Portland locations.For those of you that are wondering, is Chipotle Grill Gluten free? The answerer is yes as long as you don't have the "hot" sauce and the flower wraps.On a side note, I took the littlest rodent with me on today's travels. All I can say is, OMG, does she ever stop talking? The answerer to that questions in a definite NO!

Pumkin Bars

Gluten-Free Pumpkin Bars

¾ cup sugar
1 egg
½ cup pumpkin
½ cup oil
1/6 cup water
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup flour (Use ¾ cup Bob's Red Mill mix + ¼ cup tapioca flour)
¼ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon each: ground cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon

Beat egg and add other wet ingredients and mix well. Add dry ingredients. Bake in a glass 9” x 13” pan about 30 minutes until toothpick comes out clean. Bars will be a slightly browned. Bars will be very thin and moist. Let cool.

Gluten-Free Frosting
¼ cup butter½ cup brown sugar
2 tablespoon milk
½ pound powdered sugar

Gluten-Free Frosting Directions:Melt butter, add brown sugar and milk. Heat to boiling and cook 1 minute. Remove from burner and add powdered sugar, stirring until good frosting consistency. Spread onto bars.Note: The frosting hardens quickly, so mix it up and spread onto bars immediately while still warm. Add the powdered sugar a little at a time so it doesn't dry out the frosting.

Seattle trip.

I'm off to travel the great Northwest today, sometime today anyway. Since I will be traveling to the Seattle area this week my food choices are somewhat easier that most of my travel.

Thank you to stores like Trader Joe's for helping out with the Gluten free issue. Fred Meyer has also started to cater to the Gluten free world in the health food section. The only issue here is that not all Fred Meyer's carry the same items, nor do they all have the "Gluten Free Section" at each store.

On a side note, thank you very much to my Mother in Law for handing out my Glutino cookies to everyone, but me. I really like the Vanilla Dreams Sandwich Cookies.

To relate the issues and troubles that a woodland creature might run into while traveling around the US looking for something to eat that does not contain Gluten.

One might think that this is not an issue at all...quite the opposite. I have found that restaurants that say they cater to the Gluten free world are not really Gluten free at all. Information on the web can be difficult at best. I found a few great sites to share and I hope to help make at least one persons travel easier and more of an enjoyment instead of a hassle.

First recommendation: Taco Del Mar. I love the Del Mar, the food is great, they claim it's Gluten free. It's not and I believe it's the rice that is the item that gets you. The rice may be treated with something that keeps it from sticking together. So the bottom line here is that you should use caution with Taco Del Mar. I've sent in a question about this on their web site and at this point I've heard nothing back from them. When and if I get a response from Taco Del Mar, I will post the response here for all to see.
